PBN Basics

What is a private blog network?

A private blog network is a collection of websites controlled to create links toward target sites. The attraction is control; the central SEO risk is that ranking-oriented paid links can violate search-engine spam policies.

How the network is structured

An operator controls multiple sites and publishes content containing links to target websites. Networks often use aged or previously registered domains because those domains may already have inbound links and crawl history.

Why SEOs use them

The appeal is control over target URL, placement and anchor text. The tradeoff is that links created primarily to manipulate rankings conflict with Google’s link-spam policy.

Policy reference: Google Search spam policies. Google states that buying or selling links for ranking purposes is link spam; sponsored or advertising links should be appropriately qualified.
